300 voices

you didn't REALLY think it was over, did you?
did you notice the new "badge" on the right side of my blog?
WATER FOR ALL SEASONS - not just Christmas.
water changed me.
it changed us.
and i hope it changed some of you.
and jody is spearheading an effort to keep it in front of us ALL YEAR LONG.

water is such a BASIC need.
and most of us take it for granted.
we are so blessed to live in a country that just HAS clean water.
but there are so many that don't have clean water.
and we CAN make a difference.
we DID make a difference with "water for Christmas".
but jody crunched some numbers.
and if we did "water for Christmas" every year, it would take 300 years to give the country of Liberia clean water.
that's not good enough.

so, we're giving all year long.
and it's super simple.
$5/week.
or $20/month.
or $240/year.
however it makes the most sense to you.
300 of us.
i KNOW there are 300 people out there that hate the idea of dirty water for people with hearts and minds and dreams just like you and i.
so, go here.
and give. and join us.
(the money is still going to charity:water - they give 100% of the money to providing clean water)
it's not going to be good enough to just do that though.
(and i don't think you'll be able to stop there.)
you need to talk about it.
get others involved.
get others to give.
IF every one of the 300 voices got 250 people to join and give $20/month we would be able to give clean water to the entire country of Liberia THIS YEAR!!!
(can you tell i have a CPA for a husband :-))

if you want to read some of the other "300 voices"....here's Becky, Cassie, Jennie
and my friend, Robyn, has such a heart for clean water too.

my house has MANY ways to get clean water.
i'm pretty sure yours does too.
i wish i could take the clean water from my house and somehow give it to those that don't have any.
but i can't.
so, in an effort to keep it in the forefront of my mind, i've "copied" an idea of robyn's.
i put this pitcher in my sink.
when i'm running the water to get it warm for sawyer's rice cereal, i let the cold water run into the pitcher instead of down the sink.
then i use that water throughout the day - to fill my cup that i drink out of, or to use to make the rice for dinner, or to put in the baby food i just made for sawyer! (first time i did that, by the way, SUPER easy and cool and cheap!)

it's also a way to talk about "water" with my kids.

another way we're incorporating this into our everyday lives is baths for the kids.
we've always taken baths every night.
i have no idea why.
i think it must have started when rebekah was little and always fussy and pat worked LONG hours and i just needed something to use up time and to change the scenery for her.
it just became part of our bedtime routine.
until about a month ago.
now we are taking baths every other night.
and saving that much water.
again, wish i could send that tub of water we didn't use to Africa.
well, maybe we are, in a sense, by sending the money to charity:water.

i'd love to hear any ideas YOU have to keep "water" in the forefront of your minds and hearts and lives.

and, i'd love for you to go here and join me :-)

yeah, well, i'm stealing your family valentine's idea, so we're uh- even :) except mine will likely be envelopes this year and maybe pillows next year b/c i like the pillow idea so they can keep it each year and have it in a personal place like their beds. so nice, nice work, sista!
and we space the baths out, too, for that reason. It started when we couldn't afford to bathe everyday, and stayed that way once we could b/c of our care for the earth and out of solidarity with those without water.
and you know how crazy i am? i make my kids save their leftover water from cups at subway or wherever and find a plant to feed it to on the way out of the restaurant so they can learn how precious AND helpful water is...and then my son tells me he's going to save the cup, too, to "re-poy-pose for an activity"---repurpose. man they soak things in and turn them around fast!

i was just telling Zach how much water is wasted waiting for ours to get warm, i told him that i wanted to get something to put the water in to use later...it is so wasteful otherwise

we just learned that if you put a filled water bottle in the back of your toilet you will save some crazy amount of water each year because your tank won't fill as full...the little things, right? thought i'd pass that along...i like the great information trade that is life :)
