2 weeks ago :: have you ever met a chigger?

we spent most of the week, 2 weeks ago, prepping and packing for our last beach trip.

but we had some fun, too!! it started off with my mom's FUN visit.

one afternoon, i told these little boys they could watch a movie instead of "resting" (yay!! they said!) and then i handed them a bowl of popcorn (super yay!) :-)
we went to the farm one day. the weather this summer has been SO nice. not hot enough for me most days. i like HOT HOT. but it's made for great days to be outside and NOT at the pool (which is usually the ONLY outside option around here in august!)

sawyer CHOSE to sit in my lap and watch the other kids play and ride. one day i'll encourage him not to be a "mama's boy." but not today.
as soon as she did this, at least 2 of her siblings yelled, "BAILEY! BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR TEETH!!!!" :-)
i went down the slide :-)
doesn't this look like beach vacation prep?? ;-) there were a LOT of precious hearts on this trip that i wanted to get to know a little better...
this one is the typical middle child. always feels like she's getting lost somehow. and she SCREAMS for attention in the *funnest* ways! i took her out one evening. just me and her.
grocery shopping for 31 people... we used walkie talkies (which actually made it take LONGER. but they thought is was FUN. so i did it :/ )
doesn't this picture look so nice and calm and wonderful? it should. because it was an amazing 15 minutes. it was taken on friday afternoon (2 weeks ago today.) we had shopped and packed and even packed the car for our trip to the beach. we went on a walk to a creek in our neighborhood. the creek is right past that bridge. the kids LOVE it. but i always get eaten by mosquito's there. so. i stayed back a bit on the path, in the sun, and LAID down in the grass for 15 minutes and listened to them play. it was truly glorious.

until the next morning when i woke up. apparently a chigger (or a few?) had a hayday all OVER my body. anywhere there was clothes. under EVERY piece of clothing. dozens of bites. it made the first few days of our beach trip miserable. i couldn't sleep at night because they were SO itchy. i finally got some itch relief lotion and that helped some. it was crazy. like, literally almost made me crazy in the head. those are NOT fun little bugs. at all.

and now this picture makes me cringe...
and we're off to the beach!!!!!!!

oh gosh!!! chiggers are horrible!!! we have them here bigtime! and they love to go where your skin is tight - think underwear lines etc. scott and Karley get them the WORST in our family and they are miserable. here is a tip to stop the itch. I am sure that it is horrible for your skin but when you have them EVERYWHERE and are itching at 2am you don't care... put some nail polish over the bite. preferable clear nail polish but scott has been known to put purple nail polish in certain places just to stop the itch. ;-)

the very first summer camp I went to I ended up with chiggers and scratched at night the WHOLE week. ugh. i've actually heard the nail polish trick too.

We always have on hand, and for sure travel with, benadryl (diphenhydramine), just in case. In case of bites and rashes, for sure, and sometimes for very long plane rides. We understand it's also important to have on hand for a bad bee sting situation.
