"Fasting is not a virtue. You could do it for all the wrong reasons. You could do it to look pious and religious; you could do it to try to show off for your family and friends; you could do it because you are tired of dieting. The right reason to fast is because it facilitates a deeper relationship with God, and our hearts will be transformed, and likely along the way so too will our bodies, our family relationships, and our relationship to the poor. Fasting is courageous. And when we have the courage to live a life that is not devoted to our own desires, we will practice the virtues of faith, hope, and love more consistently."
