some random monday morning stuff

*did you know 5 kids PLUS a mom can fit in a half bath? one person going to the bathroom, 1 person washing spit up out of their hair as they gag (because they were playing WAY too hard with their baby brother - natural consequences :-)), 1 baby trying to get in the toilet..even with someone ON it...you get the picture...

*ok. i NEED recommendations for levi's hair. it SMELLS. tried coconut oil. don't like it. way too messy. i just want him to smell CLEAN (and his hair to not be dry) - not overly "smelly" any direction - just CLEAN...please?? anyone?? and not something that i have to buy at a special store - something normal.

*service men are supposed to be here between 8 am and noon today. any bets on when they'll be here?? kinda nice to be "stuck" at home...there's lego's and army men and polly pockets already going on!

*the heat index is supposed to be UNDER 100 today! yay!!!

*this is the first monday that i haven't woken up with a pit in my stomach and that lump in my throat. i think i might be able to do this...

A couple of thoughts, use just straight conditioner. No shampoo. Any good moisturizing condition works. Leave it on for a few minutes then rinse. My favorite brand to use is Head and Shoulders dry scalp formula shampoo and conditioner. This one makes my little guy's hair super soft.

You will need to put some sort of moisture in his hair after his bath. I use shea butter, but plain old olive oil works amazing too! Somehow the scent completely disappears. You could try a leave in conditioner. I haven't had as much luck with that since my son's hair is very coarse.

Hope this helps some! :)

My husband uses any kind of shampoo and conditioner--nothing special, whatever I buy. After he washes his hair, he puts Luster's pink lotion in it. You can buy it at Target (probably Walmart too), in the hair care section (ethnic hair area). It doesn't make his hair oily, just soft. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll ask him for other ideas.

Try Herbal Essence Hello Hydration conditioner. It is cheap and works well!

We only wash Ineza's hair with shampoo every few weeks, but wash it with conditioner a couple of times a week. We use Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner. Smells great and is extremely moisturizing. You can get it at Whole Foods, but is a little pricey.

Good Luck!

Hello. I have been following your blog for awhile and am friends with the Fisher family here in SoCal. I know you said you didn't want any "special thing where you had to go somewhere" but this stuff really works and was created WITH African hair in mind...we use various products of hers for ourselves and LOVE IT. (I am very sensitive to smells so can say that they really have no scent at all.)
Here is the web address:

Hope it helps and God Bless!

Just because it isn't "normal" to you doesn't mean it isn't normal. Products made for and by the African American community are "normal" to the 12.6% of the population that identifies themselves in this way. Just because such things are currently outside of your experience does not mean they aren't normal, and now that you are raising those two precious boys, the unique things they will need will become part of your new idea of normal.

dear anonynous...I'll speak for Courtney...she just meant 'something at Wal-Mart' when she said 'normal'.

I like Kinky Curly Knot Today. It smell kind of coconutty to me, but I love that smell. You get it at Whole Foods. I HATED the Coconut Oil, too. It always smelled rancid in my kids' hair.

I also like the African Herbal Oil at Wal-mart. It is REALLY cheap and smells like baby lotion to me.

I know that you can't buy this at Wal-mart, but I have also really LOVED the Arbonne baby line of hair and body wash, lotion, and oil. It really has no scent at all to it and is really natural. The oil is great on their skin and hair in winter.

Oh, I LOVE the Burt's Bees Apricot oil, too!!

When Uganda girls visited us they used pink lotion.

Good luck!

I've been out of town- just read this.

Mama mia. Goodness gracious stars. Whoa.

Reading in context is really important.

Woman, I know you meant normal vs. "location different from where you usually shop", which would =different from where you usually shop.

Holy cow. So sorry you had to field that. Last thing you need right now.

Context. Literary context matters.
So sorry, friend. I imagine that hit you hard.
Peace-

We use Olive Oil spray for my daughter. You can buy it at Walmart or CVS...it smells great and you can just leave it in your sons hair.
