sawyer had been fussy the last couple days of last week.
and had a low-grade fever on friday.
but he had his 18 month well-check appt on friday and she looked/listened to everything and he was fine.
i figured he was just coming down with a cold.
then he woke up yesterday morning looking like this:
initially i told myself, "maybe it's an allergic reaction to something he ate."
he does have really sensitive skin and it reacts sometimes to things.
but the more i thought about it, he hadn't eaten anything different and it just wasn't right.
so i took him in.
i was struggling.
every since i was pregnant with sawyer i've dealt with a lot of fear.
fear of him dying.
i don't know why.
and most days it's not there.
but at times like these it comes roaring back.
i've never felt this way with any of my other kids...and still don't...i don't know what it is about sawyer..
so, as i'm driving to the dr, i'm praying, "Lord, be with me. Please don't let this be anything serious. Give the dr wisdom to give me clear answers."
the dr looked at him for 2 seconds and told me he has the
CHICKEN POX!
wow.
it's so very sad for him.
but i was so relieved!
i can handle the chicken pox!
i mean, we all had them, right??
yes, he had the vaccine.
i guess sometimes you can still get them.
he's very miserable (so we are too :-))
they are the worst in his mouth and in his diaper area and on his legs.
he won't eat and will hardly drink.
but i am so thankful that's all it is!
they treated us as if he had the plague.
they didn't let me leave the room to check out.
they took my insurance card from me and payment and handled it all from the exam room.
and then literally walked me out a secret door so no one would be exposed!
so...sawyer won't be going anywhere for a few days!
**edited to add: thanks for the suggestions! and prayers! that aveeno oatmeal bath is awesome. he loves it and it totally calms him down!!

man! if he could have waited 6 weeks I would have brought my kids over on purpose!
we don't have the vaccine and I want them to get it now!
(it immunizes you for life!)
Um wow. POOR poor Sawyer. That looks beyond miserable. I vividly remember having them and it is nothing I want my kids to have!
Thinking of you!
Poor baby! Those legs and rolls look so sore and irritated. And those aren't even his worst areas!! Poor little guy! Hope you can figure out some things to bring him some comfort. Baths??
oh man! rough! poor little guy. hope ALL of you make it through the next few days!
Poor baby boy! Wow, that looks rough! Happy you're happy that's all it is ☺
Oh my....oh my ~ that poor little boy. I'm not sure I've EVER seen a case so bad!!!! Loving you ~
oh courtney. i am so sorry for ALL of you. i almost cried when i saw his little face. when i had them as a kid, my mom put me in a warm bath and made a paste of baking soda/water in a separate bowl. then gave me a paint brush (she gave me a watercolor paint brush but you might want to use something a bit bigger for him) and told me to paint myself. it took me a long time and gave me something to do which was supposed to relieve the itching. not sure if that actually worked or if it just distracted me and gave me something to do from all of the itching. or maybe bailey/joshua/rebekah could paint him in the bath. might provide something for ALL of them to do. :) thinking of you this week as you are "confined". hang in there.
Courtney, I'm so sorry that Sawyer has to go through this. When my kids had the chicken pox I would bathe them in Aveeno Oatmeal Bath (you don't use any soap on them), just let them soak. When they were done, I would just dab them dry so as not to irritate the skin. If I lived closer, I'd run a packet or two over to your house, as I keep them on hand just encase!!! Will be praying you through this and hopefully he'll be feeling better soon.
Oh I'm so sorry. I hope that precious little guy can get some rest tonight and that you can too. It just looks awful. I remember having them when I was three. It's probably one of my earliest memories and it wasn't a good one. I know nothing about chicken pox, since I've never had to deal with it before. How long does it last? I hope not too long :(
Praying for you guys as I head to bed tonight!
oh it is so bad i am sorry. he well be ok courtney. Hope no one else well get it. hope your weekend was not to bad...
He is fine and well ok. lots of prays.. thinking about you aunt kim
oh no! i'm so sorry. i hope he'll be feeling better soon! i'm glad the aveeno bath has helped calm him. i'll have to remember that! just in case...
oh my word - that poor baby!! beth asked me about this today and i said "WHAT???? i haven't been on the computer since coming home!" that's awful for him (and you too!). hoping he's starting to feel some relief...and that is pretty funny about a "secret" exit at the doctor!!
