cooking and talking

i knew the best way to get them to talk about their days.
cook together.
something about it makes them talk.

so, instead of making a treat that was ready when they got home from school...
we made chocolate chip scones AS SOON as they got home.
before they opened their backpacks and got all those stupid forms out for me to fill out.
before they had time to start fighting.

and it worked.
they talked.

they both seemed to have good days.
and i'm thankful for that.

then, right after we finished making them, rebekah was writhing in pain and tears on the couch because her ear hurt "so bad!"

so, we rushed to the dr. before they closed and everything checked out fine...no ear infection, no strep...just a virus.
at least now i know.
and i gave her motrin and we move on.

here's the recipe.
it's one of my VERY favorites!
{and kind of ended up being my lunch and dinner today...good thing i made a double batch!}

Chocolate chip scones
Mix together:
2 C flour
1/2 C chocolate chips
2 T sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda

THEN add:
1/2 C sour cream
1/4 C oil
3 T milk
1 egg, beaten

Toss with flour til dough isn't sticky. Knead 12 times {or don't...I never do}. Divide dough in half. Put each half into a circle on a cookie sheet. Brush with milk. Sprinkle with {LOTS} sugar. Cut each circle into 6 wedges. Separate on the cookie sheet. Bake at 425 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
