we had such a nice day.
it truly was.
calm.
fun.
just a good day.
feel like i got good "connection" time with each kid.
so, about 5 pm i decided we'd ride our bikes (me with the younger 2 in the trailer) up to the grocery store (1 1/2 miles away) to maybe get a "red box" movie for pat and i and a neighbor said that they were giving away free ice cream samples!
we get there. no movies i wanted. but the ice cream was good :-)
went through the bank atm drive through on our bikes - that was fun!
at the beginning of our ride home, there is a big hill.
joshua FLIES down it and turns at the curve at the bottom and there's all these leaves on the path and his bike flies out from under him and he hits the ground with his CHIN. HUGE gash...blood...gross. i could see things that i don't think you're supposed to ever see. i forget how many layers of skin we have...but he definitely took them all off and then some. it's amazing how you can just keep your cool in situations like that. but he's crying - as he should be...he's in pain! but we're in a path in the middle of the woods. i have 3 other kids with me. no phone {why, oh why didn't i bring my cell phone?} so i have to make him ride his bike home. he cried the whole way. not screaming, just whimpering. it was so sad. and i felt SO awful. but didn't really feel like i could do anything else. we get home. rebekah takes sawyer for me and i take joshua upstairs to clean the wound out and try to assess what we need to do. i call pat, "are you on your way home?" "i just left." "well, it's going to be another one of those "just come home and take a kid to the ER" nights." :-) they left. i finished dinner and fed the other 4 of us. i put sawyer to bed. then the girls and i went outside and i mowed the grass. it's supposed to rain all weekend and i knew it needed to be done.
he got 5 stitches.
he was very brave.
the doctor said, "i know you!" to pat :-)
whew.
so, now i know why we had such a nice day.
i needed a nice day in order to handle the last few hours well.
and i think we did.
we handled it as well as we could have.

WOW! that's so sad! i'm just imagining the poor little thing having to ride his bike home. i don't think my boys would have made it. they are both on the dramatic side and we would have been in trouble for sure! joshua is such a brave little boy! :) hope he's feeling better soon! :)
well done, sista.
no easy task.
it is amazing how we get through those awful moments, isn't it?
well done.
i'm sorry that was your night.
but, well done.
oh poor joshua! what a brave little guy he is.
getting stitches in your chin must be a rite of passage. next time i see him i'll show him my scar. jeremy's got one too! :)
hope he's feeling better soon!
Oh that's sad. But seriously I did the exact same thing with I was 7. Still have the scar (it matches the one on my knee and elbow - I must have been a complete klutz). I remember every detail of it. My dad left me with some random old lady who's house I crashed in front of, while he road his bike home to get the car. I think that freaked me out about as much as the blood.
That little Joshua of yours is so precious. What an obedient little guy! I can hardly stand the thought of him riding his bike home, but what else could you do? At least he'll have a good story to tell of how BRAVE he was!!
I guess you won't be going to get free ice cream again! I am so sorry. Glad he is okay.
oh no!!! poor little guy, and poor parents!
oh girl!...i'm so sorry!!! Nice work. You are such a great mom---I would have had a meltdown :)
Oh how scary! Great job handling the situation calmly! Glad Joshua is doing okay. He's one tough cookie.
yikes! poor joshua. owen wouldn't have wanted to ride again out of fear. he freaks out with a small fall. hope Joshua is feeling better today.
Ohhhh, poor Joshua! What a tough little boy. At least he didn't knock out any more teeth! ;)
Wow, glad he's OK, that boy is brave and tough!
Poor Joshua! Lived this with both our boys! Oh, this brought memories back like it was yesterday. They both had stitches but Craig's was down to the bone and he also put his top teeth through his tongue! 15 stitches from the inside out of the chin. Know exactly what you were feeling and how Joshua felt. What a brave little guy he was to ride home, let you clean out the wound and then "visit" the ER. If your boys are anything like ours, the doctor will definitely know Pat!!! Praying for quick healing for Joshua's chin....
welcome to the chin club Joshua! I like how Pat told me Joshua thinks it's cool now. That will make you proud. :)
oh good grief! i don't think i can handle another one of these posts about sweet joshua!! i can't believe all that little guy has had to go through already!!! whew. my only stitches in life were from a busted open chin from a bike accident too. poor kid.
