car conversation

car conversations are the best. their little brains go to deeper, more interesting places while they sit there and watch the world go by (one of MANY reasons for no dvd players and other "gadgets" to be used in the car!!)

this morning's conversation:

sawyer: mom. remember when we were at the beach and that girl died?
me: (took me a GOOD 30 seconds to get on his wavelength...it was last spring break and my great-aunt passed away and we had to leave the beach and go to her funeral) you mean Louise?
sawyer: yes. is she in hell or heaven?

um. wow, right?? i assured him she is in heaven - because she loved God. we proceeded to have a sweet conversation about how we can KNOW we will go to heaven or hell.

a few minutes later. still driving...

sawyer: mom. when we go to heaven, will we still be a family?

i tried to explain in 5 year old terms that we don't KNOW for sure...it doesn't say in the Bible. but i hope so! and, if not, we know that we won't be sad about it, because there is no sadness in heaven.

THAT is one of my favorite things about parenting. getting to be witness to their amazing minds...and getting to speak truth into their wondering minds.
