earth day is interesting to me.
in a way i have a hard time embracing it...but it's because i'm on guard.
it seems easy to get into the whole "Mother Earth" thing...and i'm more into the GOD who created this Earth.
so, i just did a search through the Bible with the word, "Earth".
you should do it.
wow.
i just might make this a new "earth day" tradition!
Nehemiah 9:6
You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.
Psalm 8:11
The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it.
BUT...we do have a responsibility!
JUST LIKE we were only given the one body we have and we try our best to take care of it...in the same way...we were only given this one Earth...until the end...when He will redeem both our bodies and the Earth!
we can't fix it all...global warming, pollution, etc.
unfortunately, the Bible has already stated this...
Micah 7:13
The earth will become desolate because of its inhabitants, as the result of their deeds.
BUT...JUST LIKE we can't eliminate poverty...or give every one of the millions of orphans a home...or provide clean water to those that don't have it...we can do OUR PART. and we DO have a part.
and one day...
2 Peter 3:10-13
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.
11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
a NEW heaven and a NEW earth!!!
hallelujah!
AND...
Revelation 5:13
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!"
can you imagine?!?
until then.
we must do our part.
we are noticing the beautiful earth today...the blue skies, and cool breeze, and green grass...wearing green...and my water for christmas shirt and necklace...and just being more aware...
{fun pic in the mirror at the playground :-)}

the earth is one of the most amazing things to me. and seeing it work and support life has to be one of the greatest pieces of evidence that GOD is real. i am in awe of creation and nature and GOD. i don't know how we can't respect this gift He gave us.
anyway...happy earth day! i love today, and obviously have no problems embracing it!! :)
yeah, i hear ya. i used to get really uncomfortable with the whole earth day thing until jim did some great exegetical work and preached a series (and prepped a book to find a publisher for), and once I got inside* Genesis 1-2 and realized that the way (poetic) that God chose to give us record of the beginning of the earth--that it was so beautiful and loving and gentle and brilliant- then I got all up and on Earth day--like a big celebration of the origin/ its birthday.
And the whole mother earth thing is fun again, because i picture this Godhead- neither male nor female- all three present hovering over the waters before "they" spoke anything else into it- and I think- yeah, let's call something "mother" every once in a while- let's do that. it'll be fun :)
and besides, i'm very much into the redemption of broken things. so, bad mother earth terminology- consider it reclaimed :)
here's what jim posted today (i'm not going to get mine up- i REALLY need to shower. hey, thank you earth for water.):
