hungry planet

i got this book from the library a few weeks ago.
it's way overdue but i just can't seem to return it.
i can't stop looking at it.
it's just so interesting.
basically, the author photographed 30 families in 24 countries with a week's worth of their food....from a refugee camp in Chad, Africa to a family trying to avoid "junk food" and eat healthier in California, USA.

"a picture is worth a thousand words" rings true here.
the pictures are amazing.
i've spent way too much time studying them.

and a quote from the introduction:
"Even today, insufficient food is a daily torment for nearly a billion people on earth, half of them young children. This lack is especially disturbing because the world produces more than enough food for everyone; it is just not distributed equitably."
wow.

"saving the world" - that's a phrase thrown around a lot.
and i'm sure i'm coming across here like i think i can save the world. (with donating breast milk and making shirts for clean water and all)
but i can't.
because Someone already did.
and His name is Jesus.
He came to earth and died on a cross to save us.
some people just end the story there.
but it keeps going.
He told us to GO OUT...and make disciples.
and that looks like so many different things, in so many different ways for different people.
for me, some days, it's holding my sick kids.
other days, it's making dinner for a friend.
other days, it's making shirts to raise money for clean water.
other days, it's pumping milk for a baby i'll never lay eyes on.

no, i can't make dinner for every new mom.
no, i can't be there for my kids every single moment (especially when there are 4 of them!)
no, i can't completely solve the clean water crisis.
no, i can't pump enough milk for all the babies that need it.

but that doesn't mean i'm going to quit.
i'm going to do what i can today. this hour. this minute.
and i will try to hand over the rest to Him.
because THAT'S what being His disciple is.

(wow. sorry. i just meant to post about that book and got a little carried away.)

Great post! It is so true that if all of us did what we could to make little differences, then we would all work together to make a BIG difference. Thanks for the reminder!
